Going Mobile
Believe it or not, I’m a fairly low-tech guy who doesn’t even own a laptop or a cell phone, but I’m looking to change all of that and I need your help. I’d like to get some new portable electronic equipment so I can access the web while on the road.
So far, I think I need:
- A cell phone.
- A laptop.
- A GPS.
- Maybe a camera for decent still images.
- Any combination of the above.
Do you love your laptop? Are you silly for your cell phone? Gaga for your GPS? Crazy for your camera? If you have some recommendations for this Traveling-Tech-Neophyte I’d appreciate any advice you could give. No insight too small. Thanks.

@Abdulaziz, Thanks for the advice, I’ll check into your recommendations. Does the HTC Tytn have “turn by turn” directions? The Dell XPS seems to have a fairly solid reputation.

I Use HTC Tytn II and Its powerful and very useful. I use it for internet and GPS and its seems very nice.
in Laptops I recommend DELL laptops XPS in specific.
if you now buy some thing I interest what is it?
Hey SK, Thanks for the tip. My main concern with the iPhone is that I’ve read that the GPS doesn’t have turn-by-turn directions.
If I get an iPhone I might not get a laptop, do you know if there’s a way to use a full-sized keyboard with it?

Thanks Ari and James. I’ve been checking out your recommendations and it has lead me to believe that I should probably go with a laptop and one other device which combines the GPS, camera and phone. The Touch Cruise looks pretty promising but I can’t find much info on its GPS functionality. Should I consider an iPhone?
I have been using a Sony compact digicam for more than a year. I am quite satisfied with all its functions. It has a fairly wide ISO range (but once above 800 you will notice the huge increase in noise). There are many different shooting mode. One of it is Sports mode, which is quite good in daylight if you want to shoot fast action stuffs. The fireworks mode also works fine. I have tried that and the pictures should have been acceptable but I did not bring a long a tripod.
In short, this is what I think about my Sony digicam: Everything works fine in DAYLIGHT. Be sure to use a TRIPOD AT NIGHT. The image processing time can be really slow and it is just too easy to introduce hand shake even with the IS technology.
I have a HTC Touch phone with Windows Mobile, so it makes it really easy for me to synchronize my events, notes and contacts with my laptop computer.
The phone is compact and sleek, but it does not have 3G or GPS 🙁
The HTC Touch cruise does have GPS (not sure about 3G though).
Anyway, the size/feature ratio of it keeps me in love with it, and programming my own programs for it is easy as pie.
